The Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 was a single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the early years of World War II. It was the first production version of the Spitfire, and it was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The Mk 1 had a top speed of 360 miles per hour (580 kilometers per hour) and a service ceiling of 35,000 feet (10,700 meters). It was armed with eight .303-inch machine guns.

It was one of the most important aircraft of the Battle of Britain, and it played a vital role in the defeat of the German Luftwaffe. The Spitfire was also used in other theatres of war, including the North African Campaign and the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Mk 1 was followed by a number of improved variants, including the Mk II, Mk V, and Mk IX. The Spitfire remained in production until 1948, and it was used by the RAF and other air forces around the world until the 1950s.
