  • Description

The name Scammell is one of the greatest in truck manufacture and in particular with specialist transport, such as the Showmans vehicles, railway related tractor units as well as a host of military vehicles across the years. Founded in 1921 by George Scammell in Spitalfields, London, the company expanded when he was joined by his nephew Richard and Richard's two sons as well. Under their management and the development of low weight and high hauling power, the company grew from strength to strength and even the outbreak of World War II saw it developing suitable vehicles for military use. Ten years after the War, in 1955, the Leyland Group took over Scammell but this had its advantages in that they had ready-made components on tap to expand the range. The Highwayman bonneted 4 x 2 tractor was one of these introductions. The tractor unit could be configured up to 50 tons and was complemented by the full range of Scammell trailers which in turn meant that the company could continue production for specialist markets.

You will have seen a variety of Oxford models under the Scammell name and will therefore appreciate their diversity. This Scammell comprises the long bonneted tractor unit decorated in bright green on a black chassis, drawing a red tanker trailer, both featuring the graphics of Shell/BP Petroleum Products. The addition of a small roof board above the cab also promotes the Shell/BP alliance. Our truck is registered UYP 877 and an interesting piece of additional decoration in gold sees the Royal Coat of Arms and the company address Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, Shell-Mex House, the Strand, WC2 on both cab doors. A great piece of nostalgia to place in your period tanker series!
